 Programme Description

The Commerce stream is a vital branch of higher education and one of the most sought-after study programmes, producing commercial experts who contribute significantly to the service sector, which accounts for over 60% of the GDP. This programme focuses on the study of trade and business activities, encompassing the exchange of goods and services from producers to final consumers. With the ever-expanding scope of commerce studies, the demand for this programme continues to grow.

Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College launched its Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.) course in 1973. The programme is affiliated to Andhra University and is designed to equip students with a wide range of managerial skills and specialized knowledge in various business areas. Students are exposed to general business principles through courses in accounting, finance, business statistics, business management, marketing, banking and insurance, economics, information systems, and more.

 

 Areas of Study

The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of subjects within the commerce domain, including fundamentals of commerce, business organisation, financial accounting, business management, advanced accounting, income tax, business laws, banking theory & practice, corporate accounting, cost & management accounting, auditing, stock markets analysis, advanced corporate accounting and software solutions to accounting. Additionally, students explore skill courses such as entrepreneurship development, business writing, marketing skills, project management and digital marketing. Language studies include English and a second language (Telugu, Hindi, or Sanskrit). The college's Skill Development Centre further prepares students for productive employment in business sectors while keeping the option for higher education open.

 

Pedagogy

The Commerce Department fosters a stimulating academic environment for its students. Faculty members are experts in accounting, finance, and other commerce-related subjects. Regular guest lectures, seminars, presentations, and business line paper reviews are organized to enhance students' skills. The department emphasizes not only commerce education but also instils strong work ethics, professional expertise, and leadership qualities.

 

Scope

Students are inspired to aspire Big. Graduates are groomed to envisage themselves for careers as Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Cost and Management Accountants, Business Administrators, and leaders in national and international organizations. They are also prepared for roles in accounting, banking, and financial management sectors immediately upon graduation. The career scope is extensive, covering various industries.

 

Faculty

The Commerce Department is staffed by experienced and dedicated faculty members. Each faculty member is assigned a group of students to provide personal attention, guidance, and training for success in a competitive world. Faculty members actively engage in research and publish in leading journals, regularly participating and presenting research papers in national seminars to stay current with management theory and practice.

 

Events Organised

In addition to the university-prescribed curriculum, the department offers several unique features:

1. Add-On Courses: Although not part of the university curriculum, these courses are crucial for practical application in the professional world. The department offers the following add-on courses:

      • Six Sigma – An Overview
      • Emotional Intelligence at Work
      • Dealing with Difficult People
      • Business Etiquette
      • Financial Derivatives

2. Case Studies from Harvard Business Review: Each week, a case study published in the Harvard Business Review is discussed in the classroom, followed by interactive sessions.

 

VBV Reddy Awards

The department conducts three unique competitions in honour of Sri V. B. V. Reddy, the former President of the College. These competitions are designed to test students' knowledge and competence in various areas:

Test on Knowledge of Current Corporate Affairs

Test on Knowledge in Elements of Commerce

Test on Competence in English

These competitions are open to students from the Visakhapatnam district with no entry fee. Each question paper contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and OMR sheets are provided for marking answers, which are evaluated using an OMR scanner. Prizes are awarded as follows:

First Prize: Rs. 3,000/-

Second Prize: Rs. 2,000/-

Third Prize: Rs. 1,000/-

Best Participant Prize: Rs. 500/- awarded to the best participant from each college.
