PROFILE

The MSc Mathematics is a two-year postgraduate programme, divided into four semesters, with an intake of 30 students. It was the first postgraduate course introduced in the college in the academic year 1994-1995 under the leadership of Prof. P. V. Krishnaiah, former Professor of Mathematics at Andhra University.

The programme offers extensive resources for learners to explore research opportunities in areas such as Geometry, Number Theory, Differential Equations, Calculus, and Algebra. The study of Mathematics fosters reasoning, creativity, abstract thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills, which are essential in various aspects of society. The department provides a dynamic environment for professional development and research activities. A competitive curriculum, quality student intake, and consistently high pass rates are the strengths of the department.

    • Admission Criteria: Any science graduate with Mathematics as a core subject and a qualifying rank in APPGCET (Andhra Pradesh Postgraduate Common Entrance Test)
    • Programme Pattern: 4 semesters, each with 5 theory papers. The 4th semester includes a viva voce examination and project submission. Students must complete a two-credit MOOC course in the 3rd and 4th semesters. Assessment comprises 20% internal and 80% external evaluation.

Mathematics programme opens a broad range of opportunities across sectors such as Engineering, Computer Science, Pharmaceuticals, Industry, Oil and Energy, Banking, Finance, Insurance, Research Centres, and Education. Graduates can pursue diverse career paths in both private and public sectors.

Private Sector: Market research firms, pharmaceutical companies, R&D firms, engineering companies, economic research organisations, social research institutes, and educational institutions.

Public Sector: Roles such as Quantitative Risk Analyst, Equity Quantitative Analyst, Director of Statistical Programming, Interest Rate Trading Strategist, Quantitative Developer, Treasury Management Specialist, and educational roles in public institutions.

Pedagogy

The teaching-learning process encompasses participation in ongoing research, seminars, workshops, guest lectures, peer reviews, and presentations from scholars and industry experts, enhancing the classroom experience.

In addition to the central library, the departmental library houses a range of internationally recognised books, including those sponsored by the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).

Mathematics Day

Mathematics Day is celebrated annually on 22nd December in honour of the birth anniversary of the renowned mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan.
