PROFILE

The Department of Microbiology centered in the PG Block was started with a vision to fulfill the dreams of the students to find a strong foothold in the fields of research, post research studies and high profiled jobs in the companies they aim to work. The foundation for this course at Dr LB College was laid in the year 2001 in affiliation to Andhra University. The department boasts of its quality education and the consistent success rate in terms of qualifying students.
Microbiology deals with micro-organisms and its instances in balancing human lives and the environment. The microbial activities are diversified and play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. Considering recent innovations and the rapid growth of microbiological approaches and applications in human and environmental sustainability, the curriculum is designed by the Andhra University to enrich the students in the core areas of the subject. The course is divided into 4 semesters over a span of 2 years. The four semesters cover 4 theory papers and 2 practical papers with a credit score of 4 for each paper. The 4th semester has extra mandatory project work for a credit score of 4. A comprehensive Viva is also included at the end of each semester.
The department also runs a Research Center sanctioned by the Andhra University, wherein Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy programmes in Microbiology are undertaken.

Eligibility criteria : Graduate in MSc or M Phil in Microbiology and Qualifying in AU Common Research Entrance Test (R-CET).

Program Outcome

The student, at the end of the 2 years is ready with hands on learning experience in experimental programs. The department instills the importance of the microbial world in nature and human welfare in many specialized fields. These studies help the Students find endless number of employment opportunities in the Food Industry, Pharmaceuticals, Medical and Research Laboratories, Aqua-Culturing, Waste Disposal and various other industries. The singularity of the course fetches a good job profile, high salary, high incentives and job security too. Research and post research studies are the other opportunities subsequent to PG Microbiology.

Pedagogy

Animation films and power point presentations using LCD projectors are an integral part of the teaching methodology. The department encourages both the students and the faculty to participate in national seminars and workshops to enhance the spirit of teaching and learning. Bridge classes and remedial classes are conducted to further help the students. Faculty members impart coaching to the students aspiring for CSIR NET, APSET and GATE examination.

Infrastructure

The department has well established laboratories with sophisticated equipments. Appropriate care is taken to ensure a receptive environment for the students. The laboratory sessions are guided under the strict vigilance of the faculty and skilled lab technicians. The department is also provided space in the PG Library to hold its voluminous collection of books related to the core subjects, and for the students, to read in comfort. AC seminar halls are ever available for seminars, workshops, faculty forums, Guest lectures and PowerPoint presentations.

Research Centre

The Department is strengthened with the sanction of a research center by Andhra University. The HOD and one proficient faculty is eligible to guide in the PhD and M Phil programs. The Research centre was established in the year 2007.

Activities of the Department

• Final year students are given horticulture trainings organized by the Department of Horticulture, Visakhapatnam, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
• Students are taken on short tours to get them acquainted with various production and processing units of small scale industries in and around Visakhapatnam.
• Multiple add-on programs are run in the department for all-round skill development of the students
