CHEMISTRY

Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College

PROFILE

The Postgraduate Department of Chemistry was established in 2003 with a specialisation in Organic Chemistry. In 2005, an additional programme with a specialisation in Analytical Chemistry was introduced. The department comprises nine faculty members: four specialising in Organic Chemistry, three in Analytical Chemistry, one in Inorganic Chemistry, and one in Physical Chemistry.

The curriculum for the first year includes a common core of four theory papers and three practical papers for each semester. In the second year, students specialise and undertake four theory papers and two practical papers each semester.

Programme Highlights

    • Year of Establishment: 2003
    • Affiliation: Andhra University, Visakhapatnam
    • Student Intake: 39 (33 through convener quota, 6 through management quota)
    • Admission Criteria: Any science graduate with a qualifying rank in APPGCET (Andhra Pradesh Postgraduate Common Entrance Test) is eligible for this course.
    • Course Duration: 2 years (full-time)
    • Programme Pattern: 4 semesters (16 theory papers, 10 lab exams). Viva Voce is mandatory in the final semester for 50 marks.

Scope

An M. Sc. Chemistry graduate has the potential to build a successful career in various sectors, including:

    • Research and Development: Synthetic Lab Scientist, Research Officer (Chemistry/Biochemistry), Research Scientist
    • Analytical and Quality Control: Application Specialist – Analytical Chemistry, Quality Control Chemist, Quality Assurance Officer
    • Industry Roles: Chemist, Production Supervisor, Quality Control Inspector, Research Manager
    • Government Positions: Chemist, Assistant Professor, Senior Research Associate, Lab Technologist, Research Engineer, Warehouse Supervisor

Graduates can also pursue research and post-research opportunities in Organic Chemistry. The department has a strong track record of preparing students for industry placements in esteemed pharmaceutical companies such as Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd, and Vimta Labs. Many alumni have been employed as scientists, while others have successfully pursued teaching careers in government schools and colleges.

Vision

To provide quality education to the students and to prepare them competent enough to rise up to the expectations of the global market and its changing trends.

Mission

To train the students in all aspects of Chemistry and make them competent by encouraging their participation in projects and programs organized by reputed firms for increased opportunities.

Infrastructure

Laboratories: The department boasts five spacious, well-equipped laboratories featuring advanced instruments such as UV spectrophotometers, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, flame photometers, dissolved oxygen meters, potentiometers, and conductometers. Students conduct experiments under the close supervision of faculty and two experienced laboratory assistants, with a strong emphasis on safety to prevent accidents.

Library: The PG College Library, located on the first floor of Block 6, is well-stocked with books covering various branches of Chemistry and is open from 9 am to 4 pm.

Seminar Hall: The seminar hall, located on the first floor, is equipped with modern audio-visual technology, LCD projectors, and comfortable seating. It is utilised for digital classes, seminars, workshops, and presentations, enhancing the learning experience.

Department Activities

Guest Lectures: The department frequently invites eminent professors and industrialists to deliver motivational lectures for students.

Faculty Development: Staff members are encouraged and financially supported by the management to attend and present papers at seminars organised by Andhra University and other affiliated institutions.

Internships and Projects: Students are encouraged to participate in internships and projects at leading companies, including Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd, Vimta Labs, and GVK Bio Sciences Pvt Ltd, during Christmas and summer vacations. This hands-on experience not only enhances their practical skills but also strengthens their CVs.

CSIR NET Preparation: Students are trained and guided to prepare for the CSIR NET exams, enabling them to pursue further research and academic opportunities.

Training Programme at GSI Hyderabad (2020)

Students from the 2018–2020 cohort had the opportunity to attend a three-day training programme at GSI Hyderabad from 6th to 8th January 2020. Senior chemists from GSI shared insights into Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, ICP-MS, and XRF. This programme introduced students to a wide range of career opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Senior chemists, Mr PVVR Sharma and Dr S Bhargav provided in-depth knowledge of instrumentation and related career paths. The training was supervised by department mentors Mrs V Subbalakshmi, Dr D Mallika, and Mrs S Gayatri.
