CHEMISTRY

Dr.Lankapalli Bullayya P.G. College

PROFILE

The Post graduate Department of chemistry was established in the year 2003 with organic chemistry as specialization and later in 2005 another programme with analytical chemistry as specialization was included. The Department has total of Nine Faculty Members, Four Speclized in organic chemistry three in analytical chemistry, one in inorganic chemistry and one in physical chemistry.
The Common core in the first year has a combination of four theory papers and three pratical paper for each semester. The Second year in which the students are into specialization has four theory papers and two pratical papers.

Programme Highlights

Student intake: 39 (33 convener quota and 6 management quota)
Course duration: 2 years (full time) affiliated to Andhra University
Admission criteria: Any science graduate with a qualifying rank in AUCET (Andhra University Common Entrance Test) is eligible to pursue this course.
Program pattern: 4 Semesters (16 theory papers 10 Lab Exams. Viva Voce is mandatory in the final Semester of the course for 50marks)
Year of establishment: 2003

PROGRAM OUTCOME:

An M Sc Chemistry graduate can make a successful career in various fields, like
Synthetic Lab Scientist | Solid State Chemistry Expert | Research Officer (Chemistry/ Biochemistry) | Application Specialist – Analytical Chemistry | Research Scientist | Quality control chemist | Chemist | Quality Assurance Officer | Quality control inspector | Research Manager etc. At the government level, there are a number of job opportunities, and a vast scope of research work. Some of the government jobs that students can apply for are: Chemist | Assistant professor | Production supervisor | Quality control analyst | Senior Research Associate | Lab technologist | Research engineer | Research analyst | Research officer | Warehouse supervisor, etc.

Research and Post Research studies are the other opportunities subsequent to PG in Organic Chemistry. The department has an accomplished history in training the students to the needs of the industry. The result-oriented teaching has fetched placements in reputed pharmaceutical industries like Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd, Vimta Labs etc. Students of the department have even been absorbed by companies as Scientists. Students who have a flair for teaching have also established themselves as successful government teachers and lecturers in and around Visakhapatnam.

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Laboratories:
The Department has five spacious and well equipped laboratories that house sophisticated instruments like UV spectrophotometer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, Dissolved oxygen Meter, Potentiometer, Conductometer, etc. These instruments are available for the students to conduct experiments as well as assist the faculty for research studies. The students conduct the experiments under the strict vigilance of the faculty along with two well trained and experienced laboratory assistants. Safety is given highest priority to keep the students away from any unwanted mishaps.

Library:
The PG College library situated on the first floor of Block 6 is well furnished with multiple collection of books related to different branches of Chemistry. The library is open between 9 am to 4 pm.

Seminar Halls:
The Seminar hall in the first floor is available to conduct digital classes, Seminars, Workshops, for PPTs and much more. It is equipped with the latest audio video technology, LCD projectors and a comfortable seating arrangement to make it conducive for a better learning experience.

ACTVITIES

• Eminent Professors and Industrialists are invited frequently to motivate the students through their lectures
• The management funds and encourages the staff members to attend and present papers in seminars organized by Andhra University and other affiliated colleges.
• The students are encouraged to undergo internships and work on projects at reputed firms like Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma Limited, Vimta Labs, GVK Bio Sciences Pvt Ltd and other similar industries during the Christmas and Summer vacation. This has a twofold advantage. It gives them hands on experience and also benefits them build a strong resume.
• Students are trained and guided to qualify at CSIR NET exams in order to pursue further Research and Post Research studies.

TRAINING PROGRAM AT GSI HYDERABAD

The students of 2018 – 20 were given an exceptional opportunity to attend the 3 day training program at GSI Hyderabad, on the 6th, 7th and 8th January, 2020. Knowledge on Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, ICP – MS and XRF was shared by the eminent Senior Chemists working here. This program opened a plethora of job opportunities for these budding chemists in both private and public sectors. Mr. PVVR Sharma and Dr S Bhargav, Senior Chemists at GSI gave a deep insight on Instrumentation and related Career Opportunities.
The present Mentor for the PG Dept of Chemistry Mrs. V Subbalakshmi, Dr. D Mallika and Mrs S Gayatri escorted the students during the 3 days of training.
