BIOCHEMISTRY

Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College

PROFILE

The PG Department of Biochemistry, affiliated to Andhra University, was established in 2002. Biochemistry, a discipline integrating principles of both Biology and Chemistry, examines the chemical and physicochemical processes that occur within living organisms. Serving as the foundation for understanding all biological processes, biochemistry explores the causes of various diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Professionals in this field contribute to the development of medicines, research into diseases, and the formulation of preventive measures to safeguard against health issues.

Programme Highlights

  • Year of Establishment: 2002
  • Affiliation: Andhra University, Visakhapatnam
  • Student Intake: 39 (33 through the convener quota and 6 through the management quota)
  • Course Duration: 2 years (full-time)
  • Admission Criteria: Open to science graduates with a qualifying rank in APPGCET
  • Programme pattern: The Master of Science in Biotechnology is a two-year full-time programme, affiliated with Andhra University, spread across four semesters. It comprises 14 theory papers, 7 practical papers, a project, and a seminar. Each semester is allotted 24 credits, with a total student intake of 39 annually – 33 through the Andhra University counselling process and 6 through the management quota.

Scope

Upon completing the programme, students gain knowledge in key areas such as Immunology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Clinical Biochemistry, and Enzymology. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in the healthcare sector, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology, food, water, and agricultural industries. Additionally, opportunities for research and advanced studies in biochemistry are available for further academic growth.

Vision

To provide expertise in the discipline of biochemistry and develop scientific temper.

Mission

To create a stimulating and supportive environment to our students and to provide ample opportunities for professional and personal growth.

Pedagogy

The Department of Biochemistry adopts an interactive, research-focused pedagogy combining theoretical knowledge with practical training through hands-on laboratory work, problem-based learning, and research projects. Industry integration is achieved via guest lectures, industrial visits, and bioinformatics training, while technology-enhanced resources and collaborative activities promote active learning. Continuous assessments and a focus on ethical practice and soft skills ensure well-rounded development, preparing students for diverse careers in healthcare, biotechnology, and research.

Infrastructure

The Department of Biochemistry features:

Laboratories: Two fully equipped laboratories with essential equipment, including an orbital shaker, UV-visible spectrophotometer, cooling centrifuge, deep freezer, and laminar airflow systems.

Classrooms: Two spacious classrooms that overlook the campus’s basketball court and green surroundings.

Library: A well-stocked library housing a wide range of books across all PG courses, offering ample seating for students.

Computer Lab: A dedicated computer lab with up-to-date technology and internet access.

Seminar Hall: A seminar hall on the first floor equipped with modern audio-visual technology, LCD projectors, and comfortable seating arrangements, used for digital classes, seminars, workshops, and more.

Department Activities

Guest Lectures: The department frequently organises lectures by distinguished professionals from both academia and industry. Students are also encouraged to present on biochemistry topics beyond the curriculum in seminars.

Research Guidance: Faculty members provide support and mentorship to students for their project work and dissertations.

Industrial Visits: Regular industrial visits are arranged to offer practical exposure and insights into industry operations related to biochemistry.
